Barclaycard Discovers the Nation's Forgetful Jet Setters

The UK-wide study revealed the average Brit risks at least four trips every year without suitable travel insurance with 42% believing it’s too expensive or too much hassle.  A further one in five (22%) forgot to arrange cover as they were busy organising their family or renewing their passport, and one in 10 were too preoccupied thinking about which clothes to pack. Meaning travel insurance went onto the ‘forgot-to-do’ list!

A sheepish one in 10 admitted to being caught out on holiday because they didn’t have relevant cover - meaning holiday makers had no option but to fork out on:

  • Lost luggage (32%)
  • Stolen handbags or cameras (30%)
  • Medical assistance (23%)

To help combat the problem, Barclaycard has launched Barclaycard Travel. The service,  combining nine core travelling essentials – such as worldwide family holiday insurance, airport lounge access, valuable document assistance and more – all in one easy to manage package. Making it one less thing to think about for holiday makers while ensuring they won’t be caught out uninsured abroad.

Better covered than sorry

The findings go on to show that almost three quarters (72%) of Brits feel it’s important to have travel insurance. Yet not being insured has ruined a holiday for one in ten people because they couldn’t relax due to worrying and had to avoid certain trips and activities as they didn’t have relevant cover.

Commenting on the findings, Katherine Whitton, Barclaycard’s UK Marketing Director said: “Travel insurance really is a holiday must have and it’s essential that any policy covers all aspects of what travellers may find useful when on holiday. That’s why we’ve launched Barclaycard Travel, to make it good value and easy for travellers to get the cover and support they need.”

She continued, “Our new product also offers a range of services including European breakdown cover, medical advice and interpretation services, giving our customers peace of mind when away from home.”

While the research shows that travel insurance amnesia is a nationwide problem, it’s East Anglians who are most likely to forget to arrange travel insurance, followed closely by those in the North West.
